New Cloud Castle Page

One of the disadvantages to drawing a webcomic is that I don’t always have as much time as I would have liked. And so there were a few instances where I had to leave stuff out or leave a panel half completed. For the new book, I’m going back and re-drawing pages throughout, making everything perfect.

Here is one of the newly revised pages from early in the Quest for the Cloud Castle. These are penciled with a non-photo blue pencil. I darkened the lines after scanning so that you could see what’s what. The blank faces in the last panel might  be filled in with the faces of some of the $200 and $350 backers. And I’m sorry for the few places where the text is hard to see. I usually draw in the speech balloons last.

So, what do you think? The only way this and other pages will ever see the light of day is if you help me. Go to the Kickstarter page and back the book. You can secure your own copy of the book and maybe even get some wonderful Kickstarter exclusives (posters, bookmarks, original artwork, and even your own appearance in the book). So please check it out. The clock is ticking, there is only 13 days left for the project to make its goal. Thanks.

The Secret History of Jimmy

Sorry, my deadlines caught up with me last week and I wasn’t able to complete this week’s comic. Instead, I offer you this:

As I was preparing for the comic book making class I taught a few weeks back, I remembered that I had attended a similar class when I was in 7th grade. My big project that week was a little comic called “The Life of Jimmy.” I dug out my old comic and read through it again.  The art was crude and the dialogue awkward, but I was surprised at the amount of potential it had.

So I decided to re-do it. And that’s what this current “Life of Jimmy” comic has been; a re-working of a story I originally drew when I was 12.

Here are pages 2 and 3 from the original. Click on the images to see them larger.

And compare them against the revised pages here and here

The Illustrated Section, the website that sells awesome comics and picture books as ebook downloads is closing its doors on July 31. Which means that you only have a few weeks left to buy the ebook of “Crazy Cal Gets A Job!” This was the edited version that corrects a few of the errors from the version that appears on this website. It’s only a $1, so get it before it goes away…

If you’re between 12-14 years old (or you know someone who is) and you’re in the Topeka, Kansas area, then I have exciting news for you! I’ll be teaching a week-long class on cartooning and comic book making July 9-13. It should be an awesome time.
